The Department invites suitably qualified and experienced Neurology Specialists to apply for a sessional appointment at Groote Schuur Hospital.
Purpose of the Position
The purpose of this position is to provide specialised neurological clinical services on a sessional basis at Groote Schuur Hospital. The incumbent will be responsible for patient assessment and management, supervision and mentoring of neurology registrars, and oversight of neurophysiology services. The role also supports the hospital’s teaching, training, and clinical governance responsibilities.
This position is suited to specialists who are committed to clinical excellence, academic development, and the delivery of high-quality specialist neurological care within a tertiary healthcare environment.
Key Responsibilities
- The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following duties and responsibilities:
- Conduct comprehensive neurological clinical assessments and manage patients with complex neurological conditions.
- Provide specialist input into the diagnosis and treatment of patients attending neurology outpatient clinics.
- Supervise neurology registrars and neurotechnologists within neurophysiology clinics.
- Provide clinical oversight and ensure quality standards within neurophysiology services.
- Interpret electroencephalograms (EEGs) and instruct registrars in EEG interpretation.
- Perform and oversee clinical neurophysiology procedures, including nerve conduction studies (NCS), electromyography (EMG), EEG, and long-term video EEG monitoring.
- Participate in epilepsy surgery evaluation clinics and multidisciplinary case discussions.
- Provide patient assessment and registrar supervision in general neurology outpatient clinics.
- Contribute to teaching, mentoring, and skills development of junior medical staff and allied professionals.
- Participate in clinical governance activities, including audits, peer review, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Ensure accurate and timeous clinical documentation in accordance with legal and institutional requirements.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements to be considered for appointment:
- Educational Qualification: An appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Specialist in Neurology.
- Professional Registration: Current registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Neurology.
Experience Requirements:
- Grade 1: No post-registration experience required after registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Neurology.
- Grade 2: A minimum of five (5) years appropriate experience as a Medical Specialist in Neurology after registration with the HPCSA, or with a recognised foreign Health Professional Council in respect of foreign-qualified applicants.
- Grade 3: A minimum of ten (10) years appropriate experience as a Medical Specialist in Neurology after registration with the HPCSA, or with a recognised foreign Health Professional Council in respect of foreign-qualified applicants.

Conditions of Employment
