The successful candidate will report to the Facility Management structure and oversee pharmacy operations within the CHC and attached feeder clinics.
About the Role
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced Pharmacists for the position of Pharmacy Supervisor (Grade 1).
This is a senior pharmaceutical services role responsible for overseeing pharmacy operations, supply chain management, human resource supervision, financial control, and compliance with pharmaceutical legislation and national health policies.
The incumbent will ensure the delivery of safe, effective, and cost-efficient pharmaceutical services aligned with Good Pharmacy Practice (GPP), the Essential Drugs List (EDL), and the National Drug Policy.
Purpose of the Role
To lead and manage pharmaceutical services at Inanda Community Health Centre by ensuring optimal drug supply management, compliance with legislative frameworks, financial accountability, quality improvement, and effective supervision of pharmacy personnel within a Primary Health Care environment.
Key Responsibilities
1. Leadership and Management
- Provide leadership of pharmacy sections including financial, drug supply, and human resource management
- Supervise and manage pharmacy personnel, including training, discipline, and performance management (EPMDS)
- Implement monitoring and evaluation systems in line with departmental policies
2. Pharmaceutical Supply Chain Management
- Oversee procurement, storage, distribution, and utilisation of pharmaceuticals
- Manage ARV programmes and bulk pharmacy stores
- Conduct regular stock takes and ensure compliance with statutory requirements
- Monitor, manage, and communicate out-of-stock situations effectively
- Ensure proper utilisation of Rx Solutions stock control systems
3. Financial and Budgetary Control
- Exercise control over pharmaceutical expenditure
- Monitor feeder clinics’ medication expenditure
- Prevent wastage and ensure cost-effective utilisation of pharmaceutical resources
- Compile financial and stock management reports
4. Governance and Legislative Compliance
- Ensure compliance with pharmaceutical legislation and policies
- Implement Good Pharmacy Practice standards
- Apply the National Drug Policy and Essential Drugs List guidelines
- Conduct schedule compliance checks for attached clinics
- Participate in Pharmacy and Clinical Audits
5. Clinical and Patient Support
- Provide medicine information, counselling, and education to patients and healthcare professionals
- Participate in multidisciplinary healthcare teams
- Promote rational medicine use and patient safety
6. Training and Development
- Assist in training and supervision of Community Service Pharmacists, Pharmacists, and Pharmacy Assistant Trainees
- Participate in Quality Improvement Programmes
- Support continuous professional development initiatives
- The incumbent must be willing to work additional hours where operationally required.
Requirements
Educational Requirements
- Grade 12 (Senior Certificate) or equivalent
- Degree or Diploma in Pharmacy
Professional Registration
- Current registration (2025–2026) with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) as a Pharmacist
Experience Requirements
- Minimum of four (4) years appropriate and recognisable experience after registration as a Pharmacist with SAPC
