About the Role
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health invites suitably qualified and experienced professional nurses to apply for the position of Operational Manager Nursing (Specialty): Intensive Critical Care.
This is a senior nursing leadership role within a specialised Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The incumbent will be responsible for managing clinical operations, supervising staff, ensuring compliance with national and provincial healthcare standards, and delivering high-quality, cost-effective, and patient-centred intensive care services.
The role demands advanced clinical expertise in critical care nursing, strong leadership ability, sound decision-making skills, and the capacity to manage complex patient cases, including cardiac and life-threatening conditions.
Purpose of the Role
The primary purpose of this position is to provide comprehensive operational management and specialised nursing oversight within the Intensive Critical Care Unit.
The Operational Manager will ensure optimal patient outcomes through effective clinical governance, resource management, staff supervision, infection prevention, and compliance with SANC regulations and public healthcare policies.
Key Responsibilities
1. Clinical Leadership and Patient Care
- Provide comprehensive, high-quality nursing care within the ICU
- Ensure cost-effective and efficient service delivery
- Monitor and evaluate patient care to ensure optimal outcomes
- Maintain accurate and complete patient records in line with legal requirements
- Demonstrate advanced knowledge of cardiac and critical care conditions
2. Operational and Resource Management
- Assist in planning, organising, and monitoring objectives of the ICU
- Manage human, financial, and material resources effectively
- Order and monitor utilisation of consumables
- Ensure equipment functionality, safety, and availability
- Maintain a safe, hygienic, and therapeutic environment
3. Compliance and Clinical Governance
- Ensure adherence to National, Provincial, and Professional prescripts
- Participate in the development and review of nursing policies and procedures
- Promote compliance with infection prevention and control standards
- Uphold Batho Pele Principles and patient-centred care standards
4. Human Resource Management and Supervision
- Supervise and guide nursing and support staff within the unit
- Assist in implementing and monitoring EPMDS
- Identify staff training needs and support professional development
- Demonstrate understanding of Human Resource and Financial Management policies
5. Communication and Team Collaboration
- Work effectively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team
- Demonstrate strong verbal, written, and report-writing skills
- Promote respectful collaboration across diverse cultural and professional backgrounds
- Manage conflict and resolve workplace challenges effectively
Requirements
Educational Requirements
- Degree or Diploma in General Nursing and Midwifery
- Post Basic Degree or Diploma in Critical Care Nursing Science
Professional Registration
- General Nurse
- Midwife
- Post Basic Registration Certificate accredited by SANC in Critical Care Nursing Science
- Current SANC Registration Receipt (2026)
Experience Requirements
- Minimum of nine (9) years appropriate and recognisable nursing experience after registration as a Professional Nurse with SANC in General Nursing
- At least five (5) years appropriate and recognisable experience in an Intensive Critical Care Unit after obtaining the one-year post-basic qualification in Critical Care Nursing Science
