About the Role
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health invites suitably qualified Medical Practitioners to apply for Medical Officer Grade 1, 2, and 3 positions.
These posts involve the provision of comprehensive, patient-centred medical care within a tertiary hospital and associated satellite clinics. The successful candidates will contribute to clinical service delivery, governance compliance, training, quality improvement, and continuous medical education.
Purpose of the Role
To provide safe, effective, and ethical medical care in accordance with HPCSA standards, Department of Health policies, and national clinical governance frameworks, while ensuring cost-effective and quality-driven healthcare services.
Key Responsibilities
1. Clinical Service Delivery
- Provide quality patient-centred medical care in hospital wards and clinics
- Examine, investigate, diagnose, and manage patient treatment plans
- Conduct ward rounds and outpatient clinic consultations
- Ensure continuity of care for admitted and ambulatory patients
- Provide after-hours services through commuted overtime
2. Clinical Governance and Quality Assurance
- Maintain accurate and compliant medical records
- Participate in morbidity and mortality meetings
- Engage in quality improvement initiatives and National Core Standards compliance
- Ensure cost-effective service delivery within allocated departments
3. Training and Professional Development
- Train and supervise junior healthcare professionals
- Provide clinical guidance to nursing and allied health staff
- Participate in Continuous Medical Education (CME) programmes
4. Administrative and Regulatory Compliance
- Attend to administrative responsibilities as required
- Comply with departmental policies and employment regulations
- Perform duties as delegated by senior management
Requirements
Educational Requirements
- Senior Certificate (Grade 12)
- Appropriate medical qualification (MBChB or equivalent recognised qualification in Health Sciences)
Professional Registration
- Initial and current registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Practitioner
Experience Requirements
Grade 1
- No experience required for South African citizens required to complete Community Service
- Foreign-qualified employees: Minimum one (1) year relevant experience after registration with a recognised foreign health professional council (where community service is not required)
Grade 2
- Minimum five (5) years relevant experience after HPCSA registration as a Medical Practitioner
- Foreign-qualified employees: Minimum six (6) years relevant experience after registration with a recognised foreign health professional council
Grade 3
- Minimum ten (10) years relevant experience after HPCSA registration as a Medical Practitioner
- Foreign-qualified employees: Minimum eleven (11) years relevant experience after registration with a recognised foreign health professional council
Added Advantages
- Current ATLS, BLS, ACLS, and/or PALS certification
- Diploma in Primary Emergency Care (DipPEC)
