About the Role
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health invites suitably qualified and experienced Professional Nurses to apply for the position of Assistant Manager Nursing (Specialty).
This is a senior nursing management role responsible for overseeing specialised nursing services within Orthopaedics, Surgical, Trauma, and Ophthalmology units. The incumbent will ensure effective clinical governance, optimal utilisation of resources, staff supervision, and compliance with national and provincial healthcare standards.
The role requires advanced clinical expertise, strong management capability, and in-depth knowledge of nursing legislation and public service policies.
Purpose of the Role
The primary purpose of this role is to delegate, supervise, and coordinate the delivery of high-quality, efficient, and patient-centred nursing care within specialised surgical and trauma units.
The Assistant Manager Nursing will ensure adherence to professional nursing standards, manage human and financial resources, and promote service excellence aligned with Batho Pele Principles and the Patients’ Rights Charter.
Key Responsibilities
1. Clinical Governance and Patient Care
- Supervise and coordinate effective nursing care within Surgical, Orthopaedic, Trauma, and Ophthalmology units
- Ensure compliance with nursing scope of practice and professional standards
- Promote quality nursing care and continuous improvement initiatives
- Uphold Batho Pele Principles and patient advocacy standards
2. Policy and Standards Implementation
- Participate in the analysis, development, and implementation of nursing guidelines, standards, and procedures
- Ensure compliance with the Nursing Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, and Patients’ Rights Charter
- Maintain ethical and legal nursing practices within the unit
3. Human Resource Management
- Manage staff performance through EPMDS
- Ensure professional registration compliance for nursing staff
- Support staff development and training initiatives
- Apply Labour Relations Act and Public Service Regulations, including disciplinary procedures
4. Financial and Resource Management
- Monitor and ensure proper utilisation of financial, physical, and material resources
- Apply basic financial management principles
- Manage procurement and usage of consumables within budgetary allocations
5. Communication and Multidisciplinary Collaboration
- Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team
- Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication, including report writing
- Build and maintain professional networks to enhance service delivery
- Manage conflict and promote harmonious working relationships
6. Health Promotion and Community Engagement
- Initiate and participate in health promotion activities
- Ensure dissemination of accurate and comprehensive health information
Requirements
Educational Requirements
- Basic R425 qualification (Diploma or Degree in Nursing) or equivalent qualification that allows registration with SANC as a Professional Nurse
- One-year Post Basic Diploma in Orthopaedic Nursing Science, or Trauma Nursing Science, or Ophthalmology Nursing Science
Professional Registration
- Current registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Professional Nurse
Experience Requirements
- Minimum of ten (10) years appropriate and recognisable nursing experience after registration as a Professional Nurse in General Nursing
- At least six (6) years appropriate and recognisable experience in Orthopaedic / Trauma / Ophthalmology Nursing Science after obtaining the one-year post-basic qualification
- At least three (3) years appropriate and recognisable experience at management level
