The Department of Defence hereby invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced candidates for the position of Cleaner: Supervisor at Army Support Base Kimberley in the Northern Cape Province.
Purpose of the Position
The Cleaner: Supervisor will be responsible for the effective supervision, coordination, and quality control of cleaning services within designated facilities at the Army Support Base Kimberley. The role ensures that hygiene, cleanliness, and occupational health and safety standards are consistently upheld in accordance with departmental policies, the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), and relevant public service regulations.
This position requires an individual who is organised, dependable, and capable of supervising staff within a structured and disciplined working environment. The successful candidate will contribute directly to maintaining a clean, safe, and functional military environment.
Key Responsibilities
The incumbent will be expected to perform the following duties and responsibilities:
- Supervise and manage daily cleaning services within assigned military facilities and buildings.
- Conduct regular inspections of physical environments to ensure that hygiene and cleanliness standards are consistently met.
- Monitor the availability, condition, and correct use of cleaning equipment to prevent damage and misuse.
- Control and manage the inventory of cleaning materials, chemicals, and equipment across various buildings.
- Order, receive, issue, and account for cleaning materials in accordance with supply chain and internal control procedures.
- Compile accurate cleaning schedules, inspection records, and operational reports as required.
- Develop and implement cleaning programmes tailored to different buildings and usage requirements.
- Identify operational challenges or problem areas and report them timeously to senior officials.
- Liaise with management and relevant stakeholders to address service delivery issues and improve operational efficiency.
- Control and manage leave administration for cleaning staff under supervision.
- Monitor discipline, attendance, and conduct of cleaning staff in line with departmental policies.
- Manage staff performance in accordance with the Performance Management and Development System (PMDS).
- Ensure that cleaning activities comply with Occupational Health and Safety requirements at all times.
- Promote safe work practices and a culture of responsibility and accountability among staff.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet the following minimum criteria in order to be considered for the position:
- ABET Level 4 or an equivalent qualification.
- A minimum of two (2) years’ experience in a cleaning services environment.
- Previous supervisory experience will be considered an added advantage.
- Applicants who do not meet the minimum requirements will not be shortlisted.
Knowledge and Competencies
The successful candidate should demonstrate the following knowledge, skills, and competencies:
- Knowledge of cleaning materials, chemicals, and appropriate cleaning methods.
- Understanding of cleaning equipment and its correct and safe usage.
- Good understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA).
- Ability to supervise, coordinate, and manage a large staff complement.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Sound problem-solving and analytical abilities.
- Good planning, organisational, and time-management skills.
- Ability to work independently and handle multiple tasks effectively.
- High level of professionalism, reliability, and attention to detail.

- The successful candidate will be appointed on a full-time permanent basis.
- Appointments are subject to a 12-month probation period.
