Salary
- Medical Specialist Grade 1: R1 214 805 – R1 288 095 per annum (all-inclusive package)
- Medical Specialist Grade 2: R1 386 069 – R1 469 883 per annum (all-inclusive package)
- Medical Specialist Grade 3: R1 605 330 – R2 001 927 per annum (all-inclusive package)
The salary packages consist of 70% basic salary and 30% flexible portion, which may be structured in accordance with applicable Public Service rules.
Additional Benefits
- Inhospitable Area Allowance (18% of basic salary)
- Commuted Overtime (conditions apply)
- The incumbent will be required to enter into a performance contract for commuted overtime

About the Role
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced Medical Specialists in Orthopaedics for Grades 1 to 3 positions.
These positions are designed for medical professionals with advanced expertise in orthopaedic surgery and musculoskeletal care. The successful candidates will provide specialist-level diagnostic, therapeutic, surgical, and consultative services within the Orthopaedics Department.
This role offers the opportunity to contribute to trauma management, fracture care, reconstructive surgery, elective orthopaedic procedures, and multidisciplinary collaboration in a regional hospital setting.
Purpose of the Role
The primary purpose of this position is to provide high-quality specialist orthopaedic services at a regional level in line with national healthcare standards and best clinical practices.
- Deliver effective and efficient orthopaedic care
- Support training and development of junior doctors and medical students
- Ensure compliance with professional and ethical standards
- Contribute to service delivery improvement and patient safety initiatives
- The incumbent will work within the scope of accepted medical practice and HPCSA guidelines to facilitate optimal patient outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
1. Clinical Service Delivery
- Manage orthopaedic specialty clinics
- Provide inpatient and outpatient orthopaedic services
- Diagnose and manage musculoskeletal conditions and trauma cases
- Perform surgical procedures within scope of practice
- Provide emergency orthopaedic care when required
- Maintain accurate clinical documentation
2. Specialist Consultation and Regional Support
- Provide specialist consultant services within the hospital
- Offer expert guidance on complex orthopaedic cases
- Participate in multidisciplinary case discussions
- Support district facilities where necessary
3. Training and Development
- Assist with undergraduate medical student training
- Participate in postgraduate teaching and mentoring
- Promote continuous professional development
- Facilitate staff development initiatives within the department
4. Clinical Governance and Ethics
- Maintain professional and ethical medical standards
- Adhere to healthcare legislation and public health policies
- Participate in morbidity and mortality meetings
- Contribute to quality assurance and patient safety initiatives
5. Administrative and Overtime Duties
- Fulfil administrative responsibilities related to patient care
- Participate in commuted overtime (after-hours and weekend coverage) as per policy
- Enter into a performance agreement within three months of appointment
Requirements
Educational Requirements
- MBChB degree or equivalent qualification
- Appropriate specialist qualification in Orthopaedics
- Qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa
Professional Registration
- Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a Medical Specialist in Orthopaedics
- Current registration with HPCSA (2026 or updated valid registration)
- Only shortlisted candidates will be required to submit certified copies of qualifications and Certificates of Service endorsed by Human Resources.
Experience Requirements
Medical Specialist Grade 1
- No experience required after registration with HPCSA as a Medical Specialist
- Foreign-qualified employees: Minimum of 1 year relevant experience after registration with a recognized foreign health professional council (where Community Service is not required in South Africa)
Medical Specialist Grade 2
- Minimum of 5 years appropriate experience after registration with HPCSA as a Medical Specialist
- Foreign-qualified employees: Minimum of 6 years relevant experience after foreign registration
Medical Specialist Grade 3
- Minimum of 10 years registration experience after registration with HPCSA as a Medical Specialist
- Foreign-qualified employees: Minimum of 11 years relevant experience after foreign registration
