Annual Salary Range: R359,517 – R420,402 per annum

Purpose of the Role
The primary purpose of the Health and Safety Officer is to ensure the effective implementation and management of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) systems within the hospital. The role focuses on hazard identification, risk mitigation, compliance monitoring, safety training, accident investigation, and disaster preparedness.
This position plays a vital role in protecting employees and patients, reducing workplace incidents, ensuring legislative compliance, and promoting a proactive safety culture across the institution.
Minimum Requirements
- Standard 10 / Senior Certificate / Grade 12
- Degree or National Diploma in Health and Safety Management
- Minimum of 3 to 5 years’ appropriate experience in a Safety Management environment
- Valid Driver’s Licence
- Verification of employment from current and/or former employer(s), endorsed, date-stamped, and signed by an HR Department official
- Verification documents must not be older than three (3) months

Key Responsibilities and Duties
1. Occupational Health and Safety Systems Management
- Develop, implement, and maintain health and safety policies, procedures, manuals, and tools
- Ensure quality management procedures for safety are implemented across the institution
- Design and implement quality improvement plans aligned with OHS objectives
- Ensure continuous improvement of safety systems and controls
2. Compliance Monitoring and Auditing
- Ensure institutional compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act
- Identify non-compliance issues and recommend corrective actions
- Support internal and external audits related to health and safety compliance
3. Safety Data, Reporting, and Analysisis
- Collect, analyse, interpret, and report on safety statistics
- Capture safety data accurately within institutional reporting systems
- Identify trends and risk areas requiring intervention
- Provide management with actionable safety performance reports
4. Training, Awareness, and Committee Support
- Participate in the design and rollout of health and safety training programmes
- Coordinate safety orinduction programmessages for staff and contractors
- Ensure safety committees and safety representatives are established and functional
- Provide technical support and guidance to safety committees
5. Accident Investigation and Prevention
- Investigate all types of workplace accidents and incidents
- Compile detailed accident investigation reports
- Develop and implement preventive measures to reduce recurrence
- Monitor implementation of corrective and preventive actions
6. Disaster Management and Emergency Preparedness
- Participate in disaster management committees and emergency planning activities
- Participate in disaster management committees and emergency planning activities
- Attend building site meetings and other relevant safety forums
- Support the development and testing of emergency response plans
- Coordinate safety input for construction, maintenance, and infrastructure projects
7. Administrative and Management Support
- Ensure delegated management and administrative functions are executed effectively
- Maintain accurate safety records and documentation
- Support hospital management with safety-related advice and reporting
- Coordinate safety-related correspondence and follow-ups
