About the Role
Grey’s Hospital is seeking Medical Officers (Grade 1) to join the Anaesthesia and Critical Care unit.
This is an excellent opportunity for newly qualified medical practitioners to gain specialist training in anaesthesia, with the option of rotating through intensive care. The position includes exposure to high-quality perioperative care and opportunities for career progression in anaesthesia or general medical practice.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct preoperative assessments and provide safe anaesthesia for surgical patients.
- Participate in postoperative care and critical care management.
- Work as part of the Pietermaritzburg Metropolitan Group, rotating through various hospitals.
- Participate in the after-hours call system (early starts and frequent weekend shifts required).
- Supervise and mentor junior staff, including interns and community service officers.
- Maintain accurate medical records in line with legal and ethical standards.
- Participate in training programs, audits, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Engage in continuing professional development, medical literature review, and departmental meetings.
- Contribute to outreach services to Harry Gwala Hospital.
- Maintain a clinical duties logbook.
Requirements
- Senior Certificate (Grade 12) or equivalent.
- MBChB Degree or equivalent qualification.
- Current registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Practitioner.
- South African citizens or permanent residents only.
- Grade 1 No post-registration experience required (1 year required only for foreign-qualified practitioners exempt from community service).
- Diploma in Anaesthesia (DA)
- Other CMSA Diplomas (Dip PEC(SA), DCH, Dip OBS)
- ATLS, ACLS, APLS certifications
- Anaesthetic experience at a regional or tertiary hospital or registrar program involvement
Knowledge, Skills, and Competencies
- Appropriate clinical practice at post-community service level.
- Knowledge of health legislation, policy, and medical ethics.
- Information management and understanding of public health issues.
- Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced surgical environment.
- Strong communication, leadership, and mentoring skills.
