About the Role
Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital is seeking an experienced and dedicated Clinical Psychologist to provide comprehensive mental health services within a multidisciplinary hospital environment. This position is open at the Grade 2 or Grade 3 level, depending on the candidate’s experience. The role includes clinical duties, assessments, program development, and active participation in departmental and hospital initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver individual and group clinical psychology services to both inpatients and outpatients (adults and children).
- Develop and provide specialised psychological services aligned to specific medical specialist units.
- Administer and interpret psychological and psychometric assessments; compile clinical and medico-legal reports.
- Participate in multidisciplinary meetings, ward rounds, and case discussions.
- Support public mental health awareness initiatives aligned with national health calendars.
- Contribute to quality improvement and professional development activities within the department.
- Mentor junior staff and serve in a consultative capacity.
- Liaise with internal and external stakeholders, including NGOs and community mental health resources.
- Manage administrative duties within the psychology department.
Requirements
- Senior Certificate / Grade 12 or equivalent.
- Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology.
- Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Clinical Psychologist – Independent Practice
- Grade 2: Minimum of 8 years’ relevant experience post-HPCSA registration.
- Grade 3: Minimum of 16 years’ relevant experience post-HPCSA registration.
- (Note: Experience requirements are based on candidates who completed community service in South Africa.)
Knowledge, Skills, and Competencies
- Proficiency in psychological assessment, psychotherapy, and hospital-based interventions.
- Experience in forensic report writing and medico-legal evaluations.
- Familiarity with mental health legislation, risk management, and ethical standards.
- Strong communication, administrative, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and within multidisciplinaryinary teams.
- Time management, orgaorganisational and planning skills.
- Computer literacy.
