Salary: Grade 1: R1 214 805 per annum (all-inclusive package), Grade 2: R1 386 069 per annum (all-inclusive package) and Grade 3: R1 605 330 per annum (all-inclusive package)
Additional Benefits: Includes 70% basic salary and 30% flexible portion and plus commuted overtime subject to departmental needs

About the Role
The Pietermaritzburg Metropolitan Hospitals Complex is seeking a Medical Specialist in General Surgery to join its dynamic surgical team. The successful candidate will deliver high-quality patient care, contribute to academic development, and participate in clinical governance and outreach programs.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide in-patient and out-patient general surgery services, primarily at Grey’s Hospital.
- Manage patients requiring general surgery and participate in interdisciplinary care.
- Supervise and train surgical interns, medical students, and registrars.
- Maintain the surgical database and support research and audit activities.
- Develop and implement protocols in line with hospital and department policies.
- Support cancer prevention education and quality surgical care.
- Conduct staff performance assessments and promote ongoing professional development.
- Participate in academic, clinical meetings, and quality assurance programs.
- Ensure cost control and efficient use of resources.
- Provide outreach services within the hospital complex and broader district.
Requirements
- Senior Certificate (Grade 12) or equivalent.
- MBChB degree or equivalent.
- Specialist qualification in General Surgery.
- Registration with HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in General Surgery.
- Current 2025 registration for Independent Practice.
- Certificate of Registration as a Specialist General Surgeon
- Grade 1 No experience required post-registration.
- Grade 2 Minimum 5 years’ experience as a Medical Specialist in General Surgery.
- Grade 3 Minimum 10 years’ experience as a Medical Specialist in General Surgery.
- Sound knowledge of specialist surgical procedures and protocols.
- Human resource and financial management skills.
- Strategic, information, and quality management capabilities.
- Experience in teaching, supervision, and research.
- Knowledge of relevant legislation, policies, and clinical governance.
