About the Role
Murchison Hospital is seeking a qualified and experienced Operational Manager to lead the night shift nursing team. The role involves ensuring quality patient care, effective staff supervision, and compliance with nursing standards and health regulations.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee all night shift operations to ensure effective patient care delivery and nursing standards are maintained.
- Provide hands-on clinical support and leadership to nursing and support staff during night duty.
- Supervise staff allocation, manage clinical resources efficiently, and respond to emergencies appropriately.
- Monitor and enforce compliance with infection prevention and control measures, health and safety protocols, and risk management procedures.
- Ensure accurate and timely documentation of nursing records, patient care plans, and clinical reports.
- Maintain up-to-date records of patient statistics, incidents, and shift handovers to support continuity of care.
- Conduct staff performance reviews, manage grievances, and implement development plans for continuous improvement.
- Participate in internal and external audits, contribute to the implementation of quality assurance programmes, and recommend process improvements.
- Act as a communication link between night and day shift teams to ensure effective coordination and patient handover.
- Foster a supportive and disciplined environment aligned with hospital values and clinical ethics.
- Ensure availability and proper functioning of essential equipment, medication stock, and clinical supplies during the shift.
- Assist with mentoring junior staff and newly appointed team members, promoting best clinical practices.
- Report any deviations from protocols or clinical incidents to senior management and initiate immediate corrective actions.
Requirements
- Senior Certificate (Grade 12) and a Diploma or Degree in General Nursing and Midwifery.
- Current registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a General Nurse and Midwife.
- A minimum of 7 years’ post-registration experience in a clinical nursing setting, with at least 2 years in a leadership or supervisory role preferred.
- Certificate of service, signed and endorsed by HR.
- Proven knowledge of clinical protocols, infection control practices, and relevant health regulations.
- Strong leadership qualities with the ability to make sound decisions under pressure.
- Effective interpersonal, conflict resolution, and communication skills.
- Competency in basic computer applications (MS Word, Excel, electronic health records).
- Ability to work independently, manage priorities, and lead a multidisciplinary team.
