Salary: Grade 1 R1,271,901 per annum, Grade 2 R1,451,214 per annum & Grade 3 R1,680,780 per annum
Package: All-inclusive package consisting of 70% basic salary and 30% flexible portion that may be structured according to the applicable rules, plus commuted overtime, subject to departmental needs.

About the Role
Grey’s Hospital is seeking a Medical Specialist in General Surgery to join the surgical team at the Pietermaritzburg Metropolitan Hospitals Complex. The role involves providing specialist surgical care, including breast, endocrine, and renal surgeries, as well as supervising surgical trainees, assisting with research, and contributing to the development of surgical protocols.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate in delivering inpatient and outpatient general surgery services, especially in the breast and endocrine service.
- Supervise and train surgical interns and residents.
- Assist in the management of surgical databases and quality assurance within the general surgery unit.
- Develop management protocols for general surgery in line with hospital policies.
- Provide surgical outreach services and foster collaboration with other hospitals.
- Oversee human resources, including recruitment, performance management, and staff development.
- Contribute to research within the ethical guidelines of the Health Care Act.
- Promote cancer prevention education.
Requirements
- MBChB or equivalent Health Science qualification
- Postgraduate Qualifications: FCS (SA) and MMED completion
- Registration with HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in General Surgery
- Grade 1 No prior experience required
- Grade 2 5 years of post-registration experience as a Medical Specialist
- Grade 3 10 years of post-registration experience as a Medical Specialist
- A valid HPCSA registration certificate for independent practice
- Knowledge of specialist-level general surgery procedures and protocols
- Ability to manage and lead a surgical team
- Experience with financial management, policy analysis, and compliance
