About the Role
Grey’s Hospital is seeking Medical Specialists in General Surgery to provide specialist-level care in the Breast, Endocrine, and Renal Surgery Unit. The successful candidates will also contribute to teaching, research, and surgical service management, ensuring high clinical, professional, and ethical standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver inpatient and outpatient services in general surgery, including breast and endocrine surgeries.
- Provide care for patients requiring general surgery.
- Assist with the management of the surgical database.
- Coordinate inter-disciplinary care for general surgery patients.
- Supervise surgical trainees and interns rotating through the unit.
- Provide teaching to interns, postgraduate general surgery trainees, and medical students.
- Conduct, assist, and stimulate research within the ethical guidelines.
- Develop and implement management protocols for general surgery services.
- Ensure optimal resource utilisation and cost control in line with departmental budgets.
- Oversee human resource management, including training, performance assessments, and recruitment of general surgery staff.
- Promote continuous professional development and stay updated with new developments in the field.
Requirements
- Senior Certificate/Matric.
- MBChB or equivalent qualification in the Health Sciences.
- Qualifications allowing registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Specialist in General
- Surgery, including an FCS (SA) and MMED.
- Grade 1 No experience required (Registration with HPCSA as a Medical Specialist required).
- Grade 2, 5 years’ experience as a Medical Specialist after registration with HPCSA.
- Grade 3 10 years’ experience as a Medical Specialist after registration with HPCSA.
- Current registration (2025) with HPCSA for Independent Practice.
- Certificate of registration as a Specialist General Surgeon.
- Knowledge of specialist-level surgical procedures, protocols, and management of breast, endocrine, and renal surgeries.
- Strong understanding of human resource management, financial management, and quality assurance in healthcare services.
